The Story of a Nobody
This is the story of a nobody and her family who were born into less than ideal circumstances.
...
In 1995, My parents fled into the forest of my country in an attempt to run away from the oppressive regime.
What they were originally attempting to do was escape the country in the middle of the night by boat. Officers had spotted them before they managed to board.
They had my brother next to them, he was five years old at the time. He would later tell me that he was afraid of getting eaten by sharks as a little kid.
He remembered days where he would be sitting next to other family members on the porch of the house and hearing about people that had attempted to flee that had gotten eaten by sharks, so the fear stuck with him.
I hadn't been born yet when this event happened. I was still four years away into the future at the time. But this is still my story, what my mother suffered so too I felt, even in the womb.
Anyway, to avoid prison, my father, my mother, and my brother had decided to flee their captors and as was mentioned earlier, they fled into the forest. Shots were fired after them. All shots missed.
In one of many of these escape attempts before my birth, my father had gotten arrested for going against the regime. This was nothing new. He was a deplorable. A political prisoner many times before.
He isn't and wasn't a bad guy, he was just against the government.
Today, he doesn't speak much about his times in prison or everything he did to provide for us, but when he does, the stories are heavy on my psyche.
...
Anyway, we made it to America 26 years ago. Right after I was born.
